MATCH THE ISSUE

Check your coin

  • This 90% preset covers Barber, Standing Liberty and pre-1965 Washington quarters at 6.25 g standard mass.
  • For circulating Washington quarters, check the date is 1964 or earlier. A familiar portrait alone does not confirm silver.
  • Later circulating clad quarters and special silver proofs are outside this preset.

Keep collector condition intact: do not clean a coin to identify it. Use measured weight for a worn collection.

An original-weight Standing Liberty quarter contains 5.625 g fine silver. Its standing figure differs from the Barber portrait and the later Washington head. Identify the original silver issue before using this quarter preset; a modern gold tribute is a different coin.

Eligible Silver quarter issues

Barber, Standing Liberty and Washington quarters through 1964 share the 6.25 g, .900 silver standard. Four contain 22.5 g of silver; a 40-coin roll contains 225 g before wear. Match the date and design before grouping them.

Clad quarter melt value

A circulating copper-nickel clad quarter weighs 5.670 g and contains no silver. Its total alloy is 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. Silver collector proofs need their own composition check; a later date alone does not make a coin silver.
