Morgan dollar values for common lots
Sorting a mixed bag or inherited album? Group Morgan dollars by date and reverse mintmark before combining their silver weight. A 20-coin tube is $20 face; the 90% dime-and-half-dollar face-value shortcut does not apply to these heavier dollars. Keep Carson City pieces and labelled varieties separate for a collector quote.

- Liberty wears a cap; the date is below her portrait.
- Original issues are 1878–1904 or 1921. Both Morgan and Peace dollars were made in 1921; check the design as well as the date.
- The reverse has an eagle with spread wings. Modern Morgan dollars beginning in 2021 have a different silver content.

Keep collector condition intact: do not clean a coin to identify it. Use measured weight for a worn collection.
Eligible Morgan dollar issues
The original dollar standard is 412.5 grains of .900 silver, yielding 0.7734 fine troy ounces. A 1921 dollar may be Morgan or Peace: Liberty’s cap identifies Morgan; Peace has a radiate crown. Modern Morgan collector dollars use a different alloy.
George T. Morgan’s cap and eagle
George T. Morgan designed Liberty facing left in a cap decorated with agricultural motifs, paired with an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch inside a wreath. The original series runs 1878–1904, then returns for 1921. On the reverse, look below the wreath bow and above DOLLAR for CC, O, S or (in 1921) D; Philadelphia has no mintmark.
Dates and varieties to separate from a melt lot
Set aside an 1893-S or 1889-CC for authentication and a collector valuation. Added mintmarks are a known counterfeit problem on both dates. For 1878, check the eagle’s tail: eight-feather and seven-over-eight varieties are catalogued separately. A date or variety premium depends on authenticity and condition, so do not price every Morgan solely by its silver.
