1965–1970 Kennedy halves: 40% silver
- Kennedy halves dated 1965–1970 contain 40% silver; the portrait alone does not distinguish them from the 90% 1964 issue.
- The separate 1776–1976-S silver collector half is not included by a 1965–1970 date check.
The 40% half weighs 11.5 g, including 4.6 g silver. Two contain 9.2 g silver; a 20-coin roll contains 92 g. Those $1 and $10 face amounts have a different silver content from the same face amount in 90% halves.
Named 90% half-dollar series
Barber (1892–1915), Walking Liberty (1916–1947), Franklin (1948–1963) and 1964 Kennedy halves share the 12.5 g, .900 silver standard. Use their individual pages to check the portrait, reverse and mintmark before combining a lot.
Later half dollars and silver collector exceptions
Ordinary circulating halves from 1971 onward use copper-nickel clad alloy. Special silver proofs are exceptions: the 1776–1976-S silver collector half is 40%, silver proofs from 1992–2018 use 90%, and the silver proof composition changed to .999 in 2019. Confirm the collector product before entering any of these as an older half.
