  • This 90% preset covers Barber, Mercury and pre-1965 Roosevelt dimes at 2.5 g standard mass.
  • Read the date on the obverse. The Mercury design shown is one example, not the only covered design.
  • Circulating Roosevelt dimes dated 1965 onward are clad. Special silver proofs require separate identification.

Keep collector condition intact: do not clean a coin to identify it. Use measured weight for a worn collection.

  • The series is 1892–1916. Look below the reverse wreath’s bow for O, S or D; Philadelphia has no mintmark.

One original-weight Barber dime contains 2.25 g fine silver, the same silver standard used by the Mercury and pre-1965 Roosevelt dimes in this calculator. In 1916 both Barber and Mercury designs were struck; check the design when identifying a collector issue.

Eligible Silver dime issues

Barber, Mercury and Roosevelt dimes through 1964 use the 2.5 g, .900 silver standard. Ten dimes make $1 face with 22.5 g fine silver; fifty make a $5 roll. The Mercury page supplies the Winged Liberty design and mintmark checks.

Clad dime melt value

A circulating copper-nickel clad dime weighs 2.268 g and contains no silver. Its total alloy is 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. Silver collector proofs need their own composition check; a later date alone does not make a coin silver.
