Weigh the chain you have, then match its karat. Rope, curb, Figaro and box describe link styles; they do not supply a gold weight. Hollow links can give a wide-looking necklace much less metal than solid links.

Value your chain

Weigh the chain without a detachable pendant. Check the clasp and end fittings before treating the entire reading as one gold alloy.

Link style and hollow versus solid construction

Cable, rope, box, wheat, curb and Figaro chains come in different widths and lengths. A link pattern is not a purity grade. Hollow construction describes empty space inside a link, whereas gold-filled or gold-plated describes a gold layer over another material.

Use the scale reading for hollow gold links at their confirmed karat; do not apply a second hollow-weight discount. For a plated or gold-filled chain, the whole scale weight is not gold alloy. Follow the coating mark and a documented layer assessment instead.

Clasp, end tag and pendant checks

Inspect the fastening and adjoining tags for quality marks. A replacement clasp or a detachable pendant needs its own check; do not assume the chain’s stamp describes every attached component. Exclude confirmed non-gold parts from the alloy grams.

One necklace, two lot items

If a confirmed 10 g 14K chain carries a separate 2 g 18K pendant, enter them as two items: 5.833 g fine gold in the chain plus 1.5 g in the pendant. Their combined 12 g should not all be valued at either one of those karats.
