Fine gold content determines melt value. A one-ounce 22K Gold Eagle includes one full fine troy ounce of gold plus alloying metals; its total weight is larger.

Value your gold coins

The ounce size is fine gold content. The 22K coin weighs more in total because it also contains silver and copper.

American Gold Eagle sizes

The $50, $25, $10 and $5 bullion Eagles contain 1, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.1 fine troy ounces. Their 22K alloy adds gross mass. A modern $10 Gold Eagle is not a pre-1933 $10 eagle.

Gold Sovereign

A full Sovereign has a standard gross weight of 7.98805 g at 22 carat (916.67 fineness), giving 0.235420 fine ozt. A Half-Sovereign is a different size and must not be counted as a full Sovereign.

  • Confirm the full Sovereign size: the 7.98805 g standard differs from a Half-Sovereign.
  • Portraits change with the monarch; a portrait match alone does not establish denomination.

Pre-1933 US gold denominations

These $20, $10, $5 and $2.50 coins use the later .900 gold standard. Match denomination and issue: early gold standards and modern commemoratives differ. Wear can reduce the actual metal weight.

  • Read TWENTY DOLLARS on the reverse; this is a double eagle. Liberty Head $20 pieces also use the later .900 gold standard.
  • TEN DOLLARS identifies the eagle denomination. Do not use the fractional-ounce specification for a modern $10 Gold Eagle.
  • FIVE DOLLARS identifies this half eagle. The similar Indian Head $2.50 design is a smaller denomination.
  • Check the reverse denomination 2½ DOLLARS as well as the portrait before selecting this quarter eagle.
