Silver dollars do not all contain the same silver. Original Morgan and Peace dollars, 40% Eisenhower collector dollars and one-ounce Silver Eagles each use a different standard.

Which Eisenhower dollars contain silver?
The 1971–1974 and 1776–1976 silver collector issues use the 40% silver standard: 24.592 g gross with 9.837 g silver. Ordinary Eisenhower circulation dollars are copper-nickel clad. Some S-marked proofs are clad too, so confirm the silver version before counting it.

- The reverse changed in 2021; earlier Silver Eagles still contain one fine troy ounce.
The Walking Liberty design is shared with the half dollar, but ONE DOLLAR and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER identify the Silver Eagle. Its stated silver content is 31.103 g, or 1 fine ozt. Use the stated fine ounce for this issue rather than the standard for an older dollar.
Non-silver dollars and modern collector issues
A dollar denomination is not proof of silver content. Modern Morgan and Peace collector reissues use a different specification from the original .900 coins; Susan B. Anthony and ordinary modern dollar circulation coins contain no silver.
